Here’s where we’re at.
The air in D.C. this week has a faint aroma of barbecue smoke and the sky in New York was the color of a Hollywood action movie because Canada is, literally, on fire. On the news, they said to make use of those masks we all have because of the ongoing global pandemic to protect ourselves from the literal poison air outside.
If there was a week that antithesized how crazy it is to be alive right now, it was this one. And if there was a week that emphasized how silly and small it seems to have to worry about things like dinner and vacuuming, it was also this one.
So, let’s talk about the foods we eat when we’re depleted, when we’re grieving, when we’re sad. The good and the bad.
In Defense of: Canned Fish
Does the thought of canned fish conjure up an image of dry, pasty, greyish-pink “tuna” floating in brackish water? That’s how most people view canned fish. Something your grandpa eats on rye bread topped with hard-boiled eggs and leftover trauma from the great depression.
But, what if I told you that I regularly spend 5, 6, sometimes as much as 8 dollars on cans of fish? What if I told you that there are bars in Portugal and Spain that serve nothing but canned fish? What if I told you that canned fish is not just delicious, but can be a luxury product?
Well, it’s true. Fancy canned fish is a great way to enjoy high-quality fish on a weeknight without having to know a fish guy. This summer, embrace canned fish. Treat yourself to the highest quality you can afford. If you need recommendations, consult your local canned fish-loving hottie (it’s me, I’m your local canned fish loving hottie).
Meal Plan for the Recently Laid Off
I didn’t think I wanted to write something this long about my layoff in my food newsletter because it’s not about food. I was only going to do an intro about my layoff and then get to the food stuff. But, as I was looking back on the notes I realized something kind of strange: I remember pretty much everything I ate in the four-ish days following my layoff.
So, I wrote the longest thing I’ve written so far for this blog all about the four days following my layoff.
